2014 Santa Net After Action Report

Tis The day after….The Night Before Christmas.

Well here it is…the day after the Night Before Christmas Maritime Mobile Service Network’s Children’s Santa Claus Amateur Radio Net.

Santa fired up the new radio on time Dec 23rd while he and his small staff of elves or is that his staff of small elves? Anyway, they installed the mobile HF rig and magnetic loop antenna complements of the MMSN, Gps and Doppler radar complements of Palm Beach County Skywarn and NWS-WFO Miami into the Santa sleigh.

Santa then conducted preflight checks and then test touch & go flights starting with “Wheels Up” in New Bern NC with Bill KA4KSB  then a quick hop to Tamarac Fl. with Bob AA4EE kicked the tires and was then off to Brian KB4IAN in Columbia S C. Santa then conducted a high altitude test flight to Denver meeting with Steve K0IBM. Santa refueled and made a speed test to Belle Glade Fl with Ray WX4PBC. While at station WX4PBC, Santa reviewed test flight data tweaking the instruments and flight surfaces. It was later determined Santa himself had refueled with all of WX4PBC shack cookies.

During test flights and down time, Santa tested the new HF mobile amateur radio by conducting his annual Children’s Santa Claus Net making contacts with children of all ages around the world.

Santa was able to use the new Doppler radar and relay stations to work around the severe weather covering a large area from Texas to North Carolina. Santa returned to the North Pole to stand by for the “Big Night”

 December 24th…”The Big Night”

The same NCS operators with addition of Rich aka “Doc” AC8AL hailing from Ravenna, MI boarded to operate the radio stack. Rudolph wore the magnetic loop antenna around his neck.

Santa took to the air both literally and figuratively with the toys and radio to begin the gift run. Santa opened the net and spoke to children via the radio net as he delivered the toys. Many children were tracking Santa via NORADSanta.com and wanted to know his speed and how many presents he had delivered. Many just wanted to know when he was going to be at their house.

Santa reminded all the children to be good, be asleep and please..No Fires in their fire places! Santa requested cookies and milk to keep him in shape. After all Santa reminded them…”Round is a shape”

Santa was touched by all the children telling him to be safe and have a Merry Christmas too. One child just wanted “World Peace” Santa replied he would do what he could but might need a bigger bag for that one.

Santa would like to thank all the NCS operators who assisted him with the net and all the amateur radio operators worldwide that allowed him to use the popular net frequency 14.325 for the Santa Net. Special thanks for Bob AA4EE and Bill KA4KSB net managers in keeping the net going!

A follow-up investigation revealed Santa did not consume Ray’s shack cookies…..It was Donner.

 Merry Christmas. Ray Wx4pbc
